What the Pilot Assembly Does
On standing-pilot boilers and water heaters, the pilot assembly holds a small continuous flame that lights the main burner and proves flame to the thermocouple. Blocked pilot orifices and worn assemblies cause pilots that will not stay lit.
The pilot burns continuously; when the thermostat calls for heat the main gas valve opens and the pilot flame ignites the burner, while the thermocouple keeps the pilot gas safely enabled.
