What the Flame Sensor Does
The flame sensor (flame-rectification probe) confirms a flame is actually burning. If it cannot detect flame, the control shuts the gas off within seconds. A dirty or failed sensor causes the boiler to light then drop out repeatedly.
A small AC signal passed through the flame is rectified to DC; the control reads this micro-amp current as proof of flame. Oxidation on the probe weakens the signal and triggers a safety lockout.
