What the Expansion Tank Does

The expansion tank (expansion vessel) gives heated water room to expand, keeping system pressure stable. A waterlogged or failed tank causes pressure swings, repeated relief-valve discharge, and short-cycling.

A pre-charged air cushion behind a diaphragm compresses as water heats and expands, then pushes water back as it cools, holding pressure within the safe operating band.
