What the Pressure Relief Valve Does

The pressure relief valve (PRV / safety valve) is a critical safety device that opens to release water if system pressure rises to an unsafe level, preventing a dangerous boiler over-pressure. A weeping or stuck PRV must be addressed promptly and never plugged.

A calibrated spring holds the valve closed until pressure exceeds its rated set-point, at which point it discharges to protect the boiler and pipework, then reseats once pressure falls.
