What the Hot Surface Igniter Does
The hot surface igniter (HSI) is a silicon-nitride or silicon-carbide element that heats until it glows, igniting the gas at the burner. HSIs are fragile and degrade with each cycle; a cracked igniter is a very common no-heat cause.
When the control calls for ignition, current heats the element to over 1,000°C; the gas valve then opens and the gas lights off the glowing surface.
